FANTASY FOOTBALL WEEK 1 TOUGH CALL: TONY ROMO VERSUS NEW YORK JETS

So you had your fantasy football draft and you are chomping at the bit to get things started as Week 1 gets ready to lift the curtain on the season. You drafted Tony Romo as your starting QB at a nice discount due to missing a huge portion of last season with injury and you bask in the knowledge that you might have gotten a 30-TD guy for half the price. Than you proceed to look and see that starting Romo right in the facemask in Week 1 is the New York Jets defense. You know arguably the best defense in the league over the last two season. The unit that has Deion Sanders clone Darell Revis at CB. So you soon sit back and start thinking of whether or not you should start Romo or not? Who are your backups? Darn I should have been more attentive to backup up Romo during the draft. Now what? Lets take a look at this scenario which surely is one of the tougher calls in Week 1 fantasy football.

First off, no one wants to bench any of their starting players, especially their QB in the first week of the season when you need to get off to that 1-0 start since falling behind in the stands early is always frightening. But Romo VS. the Jets? Yeah I totally get it and I have empathy for those owners since I am a Romo owner myself in the one and only money league I play in. To make maters worse, my backup is Eli Manning who has looked like garbage the entire preseason with zero scoring tosses and who lost both both Steve Smith and Kevin Boss as receivers. Yes a very tough call.

Breaking this down a bit further, Romo and the Dallas offense have had some major problems in the past few season with big time pass rushing teams but fortunately for them, the Jets are not that type of team as they were one of the worst in the league in collecting sacks last season despite their lofty ranking. Also Romo is athletic enough to escape pressure whenever the Jets do get in his face. It also doesn’t hurt to have Miles Austin, Des Bryant, and Jason Witten as receiving options. Revis figures to blanker Austin which means Bryant should receive a ton of attention. Ultimately starting Romo depends on who your backup is and in my case, Eli Manning is just not the right guy to start in his place off such a terrible preseason. But looking around the league, some of the typical backup guys like Sam Bradford (Eagles) and Matthew Stafford (Buc’s) face defenses that both can rush the passer and cover so they are out. You want to roll the dice with Kevin Kolb in Week 1? The opponent is soft in Carolina but Kolb doesn’t earn trust yet in my book until he puts some outings together. Alex Smith? Please. So really there are no good option to use over Romo unless you really got lucky and got an established backup like a Matt Schaub. Start Romo and hope for the best.
