Exploring Arkansas: Pinnacle Mountain State Park

Whether you are looking for a half-mile, paved walking trail or a backpacking hike up the mountainside, Pinnacle Mountain State Park in Arkansas has it all. With over forty miles of trails located in this breathtaking park, there is something for every level of hiker to enjoy. Located off State Highway 300 in Little Rock, Arkansas, it is conveniently located for hikers and nature lovers to find and enjoy, and the cost of admission is free! Below is an overview of just a few of the trails Pinnacle Mountain State Park offers.

Kingfisher Trail. This half mile loop is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy a leisurely hike, including families with children still in strollers or the elderly. It is also a fantastic bird watching spot for the spring migration. Be sure to look for the 600-year old bald cypress trees along the banks of the Maumelle River, a breathtaking sight for Arkansas hikers of every age.

The Ouachita Trail. Part of the National Recreation Backpacking Trail, this Pinnacle Mountain hike will take you to the eastern trailhead of the Ouachita National Backpacking Trail, where you can hike two miles to the edge of the park, or continue for 222 to the Arkansas – Oklahoma border! One quick note – if you plan on hiking overnight, be sure to register your vehicle with the Visitor’s Center.

The East Quarry Trail. The East Quarry Trail is actually a spur off of the Rocky Valley Trail, which leads visitors up a steep hillside where breathtaking views await. Look down on the Arkansas River Valley and enjoy the spectacular views that Pinnacle Mountain offers. This is a great trail to hike in the fall to get a look at the full beauty of the river valley. The trail is a one-mile loop back to the Rocky Valley Trail.

Other activities. You can also canoe, bird watch, take guided nature hikes and much more at Pinnacle Mountain State Park in Arkansas. You’ll find nature guides, exhibits, and a wildlife feeding center there. At the base of the mountain there is a recreational area, with shaded picnic tables, a playground, grills, and an open-air pavilion with a cooking fireplace! Grassy areas for playing football or Frisbee abound. There is a visitor center where maps, trail guides and even hats and walking sticks can be purchased, and restrooms are conveniently located throughout the park. So if you are looking for breathtaking views, mountain air, and a place to enjoy the beauty of Arkansas, Pinnacle Mountain State Park should be on your list.
