Easy Ribbon Necklaces

Some things which are so common can often be every bit as beautiful: an adorable button, a golden chain – even a piece of ribbon. A velvet or satin ribbon is a beautiful thing and, if you embellish it a bit, it can become a gorgeous necklace, a fun fashion accent, or another jewelry piece. Ribbon is not expensive and, when you use it to make necklaces, you could literally make thousands of different ones, and no two would ever look the same. Below are a few designs you can create; how you combine colors and embellishments is up to you.

If you can tie a bow you can have a fashionable necklace in a few seconds. Cut a length of velvet or satin ribbon and wrap it around your neck. Tie a bow in the front and that’s it. The bow necklace can be an elegant accent for a strapless gown or just a cute necklace for a little girl. Since ribbons come in every color, and all sorts of designs and prints, it’s easy to find something for anyone.

When you tie the ribbon at the back of your neck, and attach something to the front, you can make a nice choker. Glue on a button, a small bow, a large rhinestone, a silk flower, or even a painted wooden shape. Craft stores, and online places, sell zillions of miniatures that would be appropriate for attaching to the ribbon necklace.

Sure, you can glue on just one item to the ribbon, but you can also do many other designs. For example, if you glue on a circle of fabric, and then a smaller circle of lace, and then attach the chosen bauble, you create a layered arrangement that can accent any style of garment. If you have short hair, just tie the necklace in the back for a cute look. If you have long hair you might want to use a Velcro closure instead of tying the ribbon.

When you take a ribbon, and combine it with another jewelry piece, you can create hundreds of additional designs. For example, take a strand of pearls – one without a clasp – and change the look. Lay the necklace in front of you so that it’s horizontal, and the strand is folded on the left and right sides. Slide a ribbon into the left side, and another into the right side, then tie the ribbons in back. Make a different ribbon-jewelry accent by attaching an old clip-on earring to the ribbon. Or, poke a small hole in the ribbon, and hang a loop earring on it.

With glitter, metallic, or other paint pens, you can create all sorts of great designs on a ribbon. Draw with stencils, write your name, or otherwise decorate with the pen. Have a look around at a craft or fabric store to find some fabulous designs of ribbons, then choose just the design you want to make.
