In many ways, Duluth, Minnesota, provides the perfect day trip for those living in the Twin Cities area. Unique activities, panoramic views, and isolated Lake Superior beach fronts make Duluth and the surrounding area interesting and relaxing.
It takes less than three hours to get from Minneapolis to Duluth, so it’s close enough that the trip can be made all in one day. There’s enough stuff to do in Duluth, though, that the trip can easily be stretched into two or three days, if a longer vacation is desired.

Gooseberry Falls State Park
To get the most from your day, begin your trip north of Duluth in Gooseberry Falls State Park. The park is about 40 minutes north of Duluth, but it’s definitely worth the extra driving time. The park is known for its beautiful water falls, winding river, lush forests, and excellent views of Lake Superior. During summer months, visitors can hike for miles through the large park, and during winter months, visitors can ski through the area. Modern campsites are always available for those who wish to stay a night or more.
Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
Visitors will find Split Rock Lighthouse State Park about six miles from Gooseberry Falls State Park. Here, you can climb up inside the Split Rock Lighthouse. Opened in 1899, the lighthouse was used to warn ships away from the rocky bluffs and shoreline.
The lighthouse is now maintained by the Minnesota Historical Society, and visitors to the area can take tours of the lighthouse and the keeper’s house. The lighthouse and surrounding area offers exquisite views of Lake Superior and the nearby landscape. It’s a perfect stop for a peaceful and relaxing picnic.
Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory
From Split Rock Light House State Park, head back down toward Duluth to check out the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. Situated 600 feet above downtown Duluth, the observatory provides unbelievable views of Duluth, Lake Superior, and the surrounding areas. Relax as you look out across Duluth toward Lake Superior, watching the hubbub of the city from afar.
Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory is an excellent place to watch the sun set. If you go during the fall, you could see some of the thousands of raptors that migrate south each year.
There are plenty of other things to do in the city of Duluth. Visitors can watch freighters flow through the waters and indulge at one of the many fantastic local restaurants. There is much more to the historical city than the downtown area, though. For those looking for a quick escape to nature, the Duluth area is a perfect fit. The relaxing Lake Superior views alone are enough to soothe one in need of a vacation, and the local state parks are fantastic.
