Coping with Your Child in Daycare: Learning to Deal with the Separation

Many parents have to deal with their child kicking, screaming and crying when it comes time to leave them at a daycare. This happens because children can have something called separation anxiety when they are away from their parents. But not all children are like this, and not all parents can just easily leave their child into the hands of strangers. It’s not uncommon for parents to have the separation anxiety rather than the children. If you are having trouble leaving your child with a daycare, here are some things that can help you feel more comfortable and safe with leaving your child while you are running errands or are going off to work.

1. The right daycare.
You need to make sure that your child is safe, and the only way you can do that is by going to the daycare centers and getting a good look around. You should also meet every caregiver that will be taking care of your child.

A good daycare has plenty of toys for the children to play with. The daycare should be very clean, there shouldn’t be cobwebs all over, you shouldn’t see any bugs or mice. Daycares have to measure up to a certain cleanliness to continue running, and when they pass inspection they typically get a certificate for it, so you could ask to see the certificate and licensing that daycares need to make sure they are up to code.

There shouldn’t be more than a certain amount of children to one caregiver, so be sure that there are plenty of caregivers in the daycare so that your child is being properly looked after.

You don’t need to pick the first daycare you visit, you should visit as many as you can and than choose your favorite. Take your child with you when you visit to see how your child reacts to being in the daycare centers. Is your child excited or does your child seem scared when you are visiting the daycares?

2. Observe.
When you drop your child off at daycare, stay for a minute or two to watch and see how happy your child is playing with the other children. This will help you see that your child is safe and is okay with you leaving.

3. Ask your Child’s opinion.
Ask your child about daycare when you are together at home. Ask your child if they have friends and if they enjoy spending time there. If your child says they like it, than there is no reason you should worry.

If you are having trouble dealing with your child in daycare, just know that many parents go through this and it’s normal. As time goes on, the feelings of sadness when dropping your child off at the daycare will reduce.
