Cooking Games as a Kids Learning Tool for Math Concepts

Math is a complex concept which requires a lot of practice and use. However, kids don’t want to sit down and practice. Therefore, parents and scientists have to find interesting ideas for explanation of this subject.

Cooking technique is just one of those ideas. It is identified as an extremely effective tool for better explanation of math. On the other hand, we all know that cooking together with your child can be little bit risky (because of the baking or simply using a kitchen knife). As an alternative, you can use cooking games which are highly sophisticated and offer the feeling of being in a real kitchen.

Using cooking method as a math teaching tool is good, because the cooking is meant to fulfill a fundamental human necessity- eating, note the experts. By teaching in a way that includes our basic needs, you make the lecture much more realistic and actual. Young children are tactical and visual learners. They will never forget how they prepared those brown sweet cookies. The lesson will be memorized for an extended period of time.

You have to be sure that your child feels comfortable while learning. Choose some game that he’ll have pleasure when playing. Once you find the right game for him, you can begin with your fun math class.

Counting lessons

While playing cooking game, your child can gain experience in counting and recognizing the numbers. The process of making the chocolate cake is the perfect option for implementing this lesson. Count the ingredients needed for the cake. When adding the decorations on the cake, let your child count how many strawberries are there on the cake. Also, the game shows numbers on the screen, which will help your child to memorize the numbers faster.

Learning to count

When using a cooking game in your teaching process, there are varieties of options for counting lessons. For an example, at the very beginning of the game, you can count the ingredients needed for making the chocolate cake. Count the eggs needed for the cake, the spoons of flour and everything else.

Learning to add and subtract

When introducing the theory of addition and subtraction, you can use questions like: If I have 1 cookie, and add 2 more, how many do I have now? Or, how many cookies are left after taking 2 out of total sum? How many have gone? Find out what is the best way to formulate your questions. Your little one has to know what you’re talking about.

Learning different shapes

What is the best way to explain the different shapes to your child? Well, ask him what shape the pizza has. Ask the same question about all kitchen accessories. Also, you can discuss how many corners or sides each kitchen accessory has. Use every possible item to introduce your child with the shapes.

Learning math vocabulary

When introducing your kid with the world of math vocabulary, try to use simple tactic. Tell him to make two different pizzas in two separate games. Discuss with your child using math vocabulary in a context such as: Which cake is bigger, the first one or the second one? Extend the math lessons by adding new words at a time. For an instance: the smaller, the bigger, the same number as etc.

Cooking games can be used for learning math in many ways. Find the one that is right for your child and start playing these kinds of games.
