Best Independent Movie Theaters in the Philly Suburbs

Philadelphia boasts a number of smaller screening houses, but the suburbs have their share of independent movie theaters as well. Despite the often limited number of screens at these theaters, the volume of titles they show is significant, whether first run, cult or classic. And while the intimate setting may be what draws people to visit independent theaters, it is how the theaters use their autonomy that makes them unique. Below is a list of the best independent movie theaters outside of Philadelphia, each with its own individual appeal.

Ambler Theater, Ambler, PA

The Ambler Theater is a three-screen movie house that was finally restored in 2007 to its original 1928 glory. In addition to first run films, the Hollywood Summer Nights program features classic films (when was the last time you saw Casablanca on the big screen?), “menacing” films (can you say “blood and gore?”), and the occasional cinematic celebration (including the “Little Lebowski Fest”). Bryn Mawr Film Institute, Bryn Mawr, PA

In addition to showing feature films, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute offers the opportunity to foster an appreciation of cinema through educational programs such as Film Studies, Film Production and Film Discussions. The “Going Gaga” movie times are designed for parents of young children to see adult films with baby’s sensitivities in mind, as the lights and sound are kept at low levels. The Colonial Theatre, Phoenixville, PA

The Colonial Theatre was featured in the 1958 cult film classic The Blob. In homage to this unique history, the Colonial hosts an annual “Blobfest” in July. The rest of the year, however, this one-screen theater has plenty to offer movie-goers as well, including first run features, classic films and documentaries. “First Friday Fright Night” puts classic horror films back on the big screen while “Cult Cinema” screens a variety of cult, kung fu and camp movies once a month.
