Aramis Ramirez Thinks that His Time in Chicago is Over

Aramis Ramirez spoke with the Chicago media yesterday and told them that he thought his time in Chicago was over. He said he wanted to play for four or five more years and did not want a one year deal. He said he does not want to accept the one year option deal that the Cubs could invoke after the World Series, as Ramirez would have to agree to it also, and he said he would not.

As I have stated before, I believe this is good news for the Chicago Cubs. This is an excellent time for the Cubs to change the culture of this team. It seemed fitting that what could be Ramirez’ last game in Wrigley Field he was not in the lineup. DJ LeMahieu went 2-5 in his place.

Is LeMahieu become the full time third baseman next year? I am not sure. Mike Quade saw to that by continuously playing Ramirez down the stretch so he could make his free agent push with no pressure.

Now, to be fair, Ramirez had some good years with the Cubs, but it has become apparent that he wants to be paid like a franchise player without being a leader and a franchise player.

Ramirez would play well with a team like the New York Yankees where he would just blend in behind Derek Jeter and others, but when he is expected to shoulder that burden, Ramirez comes up short.

There are people who say you have to sign him because you have no one to replace him. I say signing him to a long term deal will give the Cubs another Soriano and will set the Chicago Cubs back one more year in their search for a new identity and culture.

If the Chicago Cubs really want to change the culture of their team they have to do what is best for the team in the short and long term and letting Ramirez go is good for both sides and satisfy the Cubs short and long term needs.
