ABC’s Working it Isn’t Working at All

The entire premise of the new ABC sitcom Working It is so faulty that it’s no surprise that viewers aren’t connecting with the show, Donna Addkison, the President and CEO of Wider Opportunities for Women, has said in her commentary, She Takes on the World. She referenced a quote from one of the show’s characters, “Women are taking on the workforce. Soon they’ll just start getting rid of the men,” saying the idea is just a myth, and network executive and the show’s writers failed to check the facts before filming.

Addkison pointed to a recent national jobs report that showed unemployment for women isn’t declining; in fact, 300,000 more women have lost their jobs recently. More men are obtaining new jobs, while fewer women are being hired. Between October 2010 and October 2011, only 27 percent of the 1.5 million newly-created jobs nationwide went to women.

Wider Opportunities for Women issued a report stating that 45 percent of all Americans are unable to cover their basic needs. For women, 42 percent earn less than what it takes to be secure and provide the basics of life for their households. With the results the report obtained, Addkison said the premise of Working It is unrealistic.
