A Family-friendly Weekend in Bath, England

If you and your family have a weekend to spare in your travels, consider the southwest region of England. Bath and the surrounding area of Bristol and beyond provide a plethora of activities and opportunities for children of all ages and their parents alike.

Travel/Getting Around

There are several ways to get to and get around in the UK. Fly into Bristol Airport, located less than 30 minutes away. While it is possible to spend the weekend in Bath and/or Bristol and walk or take the train between sights, you may choose to rent a car for the duration of the weekend. This will allow you to venture out of the city center and expand your horizons during your stay.

Where to Stay

Renting a car opens up endless possibilities as you determine where you’d like to stay. During my first trip to Bath, we stayed outside the city on the Pennsylvania Farm. This working farm boasts several self-catering cottages and a bed and breakfast option. They are family-friendly. Both Bristol and Bath’s official tourism websites allows you to search in the region for family-friendly accommodation that will meet your specific needs.

Where to Eat

Your meal plan will vary depending on the type of accommodation that you select. If you choose a bed and breakfast, you’ll need to plan to eat your dinner and tea out. If you choose self-catering, you can head to the nearest Sainsbury’s or Co-op and stock your refrigerator with the necessities. This was always our preference when traveling with children.

When you are eating out with children, you’ll find that most places are welcoming. The exception will be pubs in the evening, often preferring to cater to adults only. Consider an ASK Italian restaurant, ideal for families, with locations in both Bristol and Bath. It’s ideal for a family-friendly lunch.

For dinners, try Giraffe or The Chequers. Both cater to families.

What to See & Do

There’s so much to see and do in Bath, Bristol, and the southwest of England. Plan to arrive on Friday afternoon, check into your hotel or bed and breakfast, and then head out for dinner with the kids. Go to bed early so you’re well rested for a full day of sightseeing tomorrow.

Before you head into Bath for the day, drive about an hour to either Avebury or Stonehenge. Avebury won’t be as crowded with tourists and many feel it’s equally spectacular. Then, head into Bath. Spend Saturday exploring Bath-visit the Royal Baths, walk along Pultaney Bridge, and explore the Royal Crescent. Consider a hop-on, hop-off bus tour to see the city (and give the kids a rest from all the walking).

Devote Sunday to Bristol, where your children will really be delighted. See either the Bristol Zoo Gardens or the Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm. Explore Bristol Cathedral and see the Clifton Suspension Bridge. You’ll get loads of spectacular pictures and the kids will have a great day, too.

You’ll leave Bath and the southwest of England exhausted, but thankful you made the trip.
