What is the best remedy for cold sores?
Q: I get a cold sore at least once every quarter. I’ve tried various over the counter the counter medications and there were no significant improvements. I’ve also heard about devices such as Cold Sore Eliminator and Dermaseptic, but they seem gimicky.
A: Cold sores are actually caused by a virus that usually stays inactive in your body but sort of takes over in times of stress – such as when you are sick, get too much sun, have difficult things happening in your life, etc. Once you have the cold sore virus in your body it is always there – you can’t actually get rid of it, but you can certainly get it under excellent control. There are no over the counter meds that work for cold sores. Stuff that you put on the cold sore may help with the soreness and pain, but most of it doesn’t actually attack the virus itself. You need a prescription med called Valtrex. It is a big blue pill. Valtrex is actually prescribed for genital herpes, but the cold sore virus is from the same family, and Valtrex stops a cold sore in its tracks. Valtrex attacks the virus itself, not just the symptoms. Since I first took Valtrex about five years ago, I have rarely had a cold sore, and never had one develop fully. You take Valtrex for only a couple of days when you first feel the tingle of a cold sore starting.
I have an average looking cold sore. What are some home remedies for this?
Q: As the question says, it’s average, not huge or anything, but it’s still there. Does anybody know of any home remedies to cure the cold sore? If not, which over-the-counter medicines are best for it?
A: Ly-SineThis is in with the vitamins. Take it when you feel one coming on and continue taking one a day until it is gone. This should cut down the time of the breakout.I have not met anyone that it does not work for.
Coldsore remedies Please help!?
Q: A day ago, I felt my bottom lip was very sore and sensitive and it felt like it was swelling up. Then later on that day a few really small cold sores poped up. Right now it’s not noticable at all unless you get really really close up and personal. But my lips feel really horrible like it feels really dry and really sensitive on the area. Im getting some ointment for it but I don’t know what to chose. I need something fast becuase School starts in 5 days for me and I don’t want my lips to be all dry and disguisting and ruin my first impressions.Since it’s my mom paying for it, I can’t get Abreva which costs like 20 dollars. I want to ask what other over the counter cold sore ointments are good and which one is the best. Is Lipactin good? Or what about Blistex? And also are there things I should be doing to avoid the cold sore getting bigger? Like should I constantly be washing my lips and keep it dry or should I be drinking lots of water? Please help, I get cold sores every year atleast once in the winter time and this is my first time I’ve had it in the summer. And I can’t go get a perscription becuase I don’t have time to now.
