Winter Skin Care Tips for Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, you know the frustration of that constant greasy feeling and shiny look. In the wintertime, however, your skin might start to even out a little, looking less oily day by day. The dryness of winter is too blame, and if left untended, your skin could actually swing in the other direction and become too dry. Lay on the moisturizer, though, and you’re right back to oily. So how should you care for oily skin in the winter?

Start by Exfoliating
With oily skin, keeping everything balanced, in check, and clear of buildup is the key to staying pimple-free. Even in the winter, adopt a regular exfoliation routine. Every other day works year-round, but in the winter, you may start to feel extra dry and sensitive to your scrub. Drop down to twice a week scrubbing if you start to feel pinching or tightness of your skin. It’s okay to take a break, but don’t stop your routine completely, or you’ll wind up with a rampant breakout straight through the spring season!

Go Oil-Free for Moisture
You do need moisture all year long, even with oily skin. The difference is, you need an oil-free lotion that is water based to get effective moisture. If you have the right one, your skin will stay hydrated by also be better equipped to regulate the production of oil. The result: no tightness and no t-zone shine! Stay away from heavy butters and creams and look on the ingredients label for plain old water. If it’s listed first, you’re in the clear!

Use your moisturizer day and night, after every face washing, to make sure you keep your skin hydrated. Then, further your routine by choosing sunscreen, foundation, and powder that are also oil-free.

Get Your Vitamins
Even better than an oil-free moisturizer, try to find one that is also enriched with vitamin E. This essential ingredient boost’s skin health without clogging pores and can help to soothe any irritation to the skin from the cold, harsh elements of winter.

Lifestyle Adjustments
If you have oily skin, no matter what time of year it is, you’ll need to make some adjustments to your lifestyle to keep that oil in check. Stay away from long, hot showers, which will dry out the skin and destroy the natural balance of moisture in your skin. As a result, your skin will compensate by making extra oil, and you’re back to square one.

You should also eat a healthy diet full of natural, organic foods and rich in vitamins all year long. Regular exercise and daily hydration (drink around eight glasses of water a day) can go a long way toward healthy skin, no matter what condition it is or what the weather is doing outside!
