Why You’re Likely to Have a Stroke

Unfortunately, there are as many ways you can’t prevent a stroke as there are ways you can. You can manage your weight and stress level, but you can’t do anything about your gender. But hey, knowing what you can’t control about your risk factors for having a stroke will at least keep you aware, right? Learn the uncontrollable risk factors for stroke so you can best protect yourself now.

If you are male you are more at risk for a stroke (just as for a heart attack) than women are. Men are always more likely to have a stroke than women are. Women raise their risks for stroke if they are on birth control pills, smoke, on birth control pills and smoke, or are pregnant. One thing women can’t control, however, is that the likelihood of stroke raises with menopause. Men, remember though- you are always at a greater risk of stroke than women, so be sure to take care of your heart.

Your race plays a huge role in your risk factors for stroke as well. Black people have higher risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, and therefore stroke, than white people. Other races at greater risk for stroke are Asians, Hawaiians, Mexicans, and American Indians. Getting your blood pressure checked regularly and checking your cholesterol levels can help protect you against stroke.

Unfortunately, if you have a history of heart disease or stroke in your family, you are at greater risk for stroke as well whether you are unhealthy or healthy as a horse. Genetics just plain can be a huge determination of whether you are going to have a stroke or not. However, leading a healthier lifestyle can work in your favor. Just because your genetics predispose you to stroke doesn’t mean you will absolutely have one. You can make healthy heart choices and protect yourself against a stroke overall.

Aging in general raises stroke risks for both men and women, and for women (as mentioned above) going through menopause can increase stroke risks as well. While you can’t stop yourself from aging, you can age your heart in a healthy manner by keeping it healthy with proper diet and exercise.
