Why Veterans Make Good Employees

Veterans are punctual, hard-working, dependable team players. Most of us have served overseas and have been through things people wouldn’t understand. When we come home we do not ask for handouts or a thank you for our time being there. We only ask that you don’t ask us if we have killed someone or watched a buddy die. The only time we find it acceptable to ask about our time is when it may be for a job.

The unemployment rate for Veterans is higher than our civilian counterparts. If so many companies are “Military Friendly”, then why are we struggling to find work? It honestly comes down to veterans not being able to translate their skills to civilian job titles. Some companies do not know how to interpret “military lingo”. Most may think if they hire military that they will have to deal with P.T.S.D.(Post traumatic stress disorder). Veterans demonstrate great work ethic and maturity that you would not get with our civilian counterparts. We are leaders and we do what we are told. Give us a specific set of directions and they will be completed word for word. Vets like myself show pride in our work, we are loyal and logical thinkers.

Our skills and training are beyond college textbook learning. Everything we have done has been hands on. We are trained to learn new skills quickly and to apply them in any situation. Most of the time you wont find that in your recent college grad. Veterans do not need specific industry experience to make impacts on civilian employers. We will accept any position, with any company, and show them why we are the best. Economists(whoever these guys are) blame the high joblessness on the lack of acquiring marketable civilian skills. It must come down to our out-processing not being good enough. What we as Vets need to do is educate ourselves, adapt, and bring down the unemployment rate.
