What is the Dream Act About?

There is a lot of talk lately about California passing “The Dream Act” 2011. The Dream Act is controversial because it basically disregards many American’s beliefs on Immigration control.,

The Dream Act’s core premise is allowing illegal aliens obtain permanent residency here if the following conditions are met: came here as a minor, either finish two years in the military or two years of a four year college. After completion of one of these requirements, the illegal alien will then be given a legal six year residency here. Once the six years is up, the illegal alien, under the provisions of The Dream Act 2011, will be eligible to apply to become a permanent resident.

Although, they are not eligible for educational grants (such as Pell), they are eligible for student loans and work-study. Many Americans feel is this not fair, as it is using resources originally intended for legal Americans.

Another point of contention amongst opponents of the bill is the educational loan payback probability. If they are not citizens, they could disappear. This means they would not pay California back the money for the loans. Whereas, American citizens are tracked by our social security numbers everywhere we go. It is virtually impossible to skip out on an educational loan.

Proponents of The Dream Act bill feel the taxes these illegal aliens will pay once they find employment will justify the bill. They feel the approximately 2.1 million possible Dream Act participants will generate approximately $3.2 trillion in taxable income.

Is it un-American to want to close the borders and save our resources for our American citizens? Or is it un-American to wish to assist all who come to America looking for a brighter future? These questions will always be the core of the greatly controversial debate.
