Walking Canes Can Help Tone and Strengthen Flabby Arms

If you’ve never used a walking cane before the first time that you use it you may experience some mild discomfort. It takes some adjustment to be able to balance and move the cane at a walking pace. After a day of using the cane you may experience soreness in the hands and arms. The next day it might be a little difficult to use the cane because of the soreness. Frequent use of the cane will eventually work the tenderness out and calluses may form on the underbelly of the hands.

One way to reduce soreness and stop blisters and calluses from forming on the hands is to wear gloves when using a cane.

The walking cane gives support much in the same way as leaning on someone so as not to fall. It may however be an aid in fitness. You may have witnessed the use of a cane in a dance routine that involved tuxes and tails with top hats. A dance routine may be just one key use for the cane, which on other occasions might have served as a somewhat stable prop for a revolving forehead spinning around until such time as to feel dizzy.

One of the best fitness uses of a walking cane is to do exactly what it was designed for as an aid in walking. The cane is like a resistance weight bearing exercise to the arms. The arms bear down on the cane and it stands in resistance not breaking or falling apart but almost pushing back as it temporarily touches the ground.

As what is experienced in the day of a first time user the cane will leave its mark in tired, sore hands and arms. If you were to exercise with a one to five pound weight for the first time you would likely experience some soreness in the arms and perhaps the hands. Using muscles that you aren’t used to using usually involves soreness to some degree. Exercise tries to work those muscles.

A walking cane can help to tone and strengthen flabby arms just by using it for exactly what it was meant for. Walk with the cane on your regular walking routine or use it around the house. Place the cane in your right hand and walk with it for ten to fifteen minutes then switch it over to the other side and walk with it using the left hand for a good ten to fifteen minutes. You can do this daily or for at least two to three times a week.
