Verses on Strength in the Bible

Verses from the Bible about strength tell us how God gives us courage, and hope even when we are weak. There are many times in life where we feel as if we “just can’t take any more”. I know that feeling.

Here are three situations where I needed strength, and God gave me strength, comfort, and hope to continue on. If you are facing similar situations, God is there and will carry you through too.

Strength for facing money difficulties:
Many people are facing financial hardships right now. In my own life there was a time when there wasn’t enough food in our house to feed our family. No one knew our situation. My husband and I prayed about it, and the next day someone left several bags of groceries on our door step. We both couldn’t believe it! It was enough to get us through a difficult week. No one knew what we were going through, but God knew, and answered our prayer. He is always there and will never forsake us.

Hebrews 13:5
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ “

Strength when we have no control over a situation:
It’s easy to feel strong when everything in life goes well and we feel in control. When we face difficult situations that we can’t control, however, that is when our courage often fails. Many years ago, one of my sons left home as a young adult and, in his anger and desire to do what he wanted with his life, didn’t tell us where he was going.

For almost two years, I didn’t know where he was. My “mother’s heart” at times felt as if it wouldn’t survive not knowing if he was okay–then I would pray for strength for myself, and pray for my son.

My prayer for him was, “God I don’t know where my son is but you know exactly where he is. I ask that you take care of him and keep him from harm. Bring him back to us…and to you” I always felt a sense of peace when I gave the situation to God. One day, out of the blue, he called and wanted to come home. Today his life is completely different, he lives knowing that God is with him.

Psalm 34:15
“The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry.”

Psalm 55:22
“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

Strength when we face sorrow:
When I was in my twenties, my husband left me for another woman. He was my high school sweetheart whom I dearly loved, and the father of my young children. Through this time in my life, I learned what it meant to have a broken heart as I watched my children suffer, and our marriage crumble. I didn’t even know a person could cry as much as I did. It seemed there would never be another day of joy in my future. It felt as if all my prayers were going unheard, that God had also left me.

Time passed, and I kept praying for God to act. Little by little small joys slipped into the cracks of my heart like glue mending a broken piece of shattered pottery. God was comforting me. He didn’t change the situation; he changed me. Eventually my sorrow lessened. I found new love, and have been married for over twenty years now.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4
“[ Praise to the God of All Comfort ] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

Verses about strength are all throughout the Bible. People in the Bible faced the same kinds of situations we face. God is the God of comfort, of peace, and hope. He will give us strength. God never changes. Just as I had to allow him to mend my brokenness from my marriage, give me hope for my son, and look to him for help…he is there for you too– waiting for you to ask for his intervention.

Psalm 120:1
I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me.
