Tommy Quincy- the Perfect Man

Instant Star was a teen drama almost ahead of its time. It followed the story of a 16-year-old girl who won a talent competition in Toronto. The viewers get a taste of what it’s like trying to balance a “normal life” and fame. Throughout the four seasons, it’s not just the story of Jude Harrison’s success that kept fans tuning in, it was the love story of Instant Star Jude and Tommy (her producer) that was beyond turbulent. Instant Star episodes left us with a number of great pop songs and a classic love story that few can match.

The result of this love story is my favorite fictional character of all time, Tommy Quincy. In most instant star episodes featured the troubled producer trying to fight his feelings for the girl he mentored. From the moment he met Jude there was sparks between Instant Star Jude and Tommy, even if he was 23 and she was 16. During the first season he appeared to be a not-so-complicated former boy bander (Tommy Q) who was fighting with himself over how to deal with his feelings for the young girl, even if it meant trying to love her sister.

Throughout seasons two, three and four we watch as he decides that his love for Jude is worth losing everything. He tries to let her in, but continuously messes up trying to “protect her” or “do what is right.” We watch as he slowly reveals a deep dark secret that truly is why he holds back from pursuing anything with Jude. During season two and three Instant Star episodes, Tommy tries to let his guard down but is too worried that Jude will not love him or he’ll only hurt her. Eventually his past catches up, but love conquers all.

Though many view the love of Instant Star Jude and Tommy as unhealthy and delusional, I can’t help but relate to them. Tommy isn’t a bad guy, he’s just lost. He’s made mistakes he wants to own up to and not let own his life. The problems in his past show that he’s a stand up guy who wants to love Jude. He wants to let her in and protect her, even if he isn’t always strong enough to do this. Tommy’s more than just a tough guy, he’s funny and doesn’t let people push him around. There’s few characters on television as real as Tommy Quincy.
