Tis the Season

So the holidays are over and you’re exhausted. Who can blame you? Tons of turkey, smothering relatives, the “Oh you shouldn’t have, no really, you shouldn’t have” gifts – equals long line ups at the return counter. Not to mention an empty liquor cabinet courtesy of borderline lunatic relatives and the broken heart you received for Christmas. Yes its true, the holidays are peak period for break-ups.

Statistics show that due to many factors including stress, climate, finances, the closer you get to the holiday season, the harder it is to stick together. Now if you’re one of the lucky ones who made it through, then I’m sorry but you’re not invited to the Bridget Jones’s Diary movie marathon night!

Look on the bright side, its a New Year and that means a fresh start, new beginnings, hope and glory. While the holidays may have been bitter sweet, this is the time for you to go out there and Get-Ready-Set-Date! Dating experts and online dating companies agree, the first couple of months of the year are the busiest. Hundreds of new sign-ups for dating sites, people registering with matchmakers and don’t forget that cute guy or girl you exchanged numbers with on New Years Eve. In the words of Alfred Tennyson ” Ring out the old, ring in the new”.

Now get off that couch, put away that bowl of Cheetos and the beer, change out of your two day old pajamas, yes you heard me and stop feeling sorry for yourself. Go out there, get a new hair cut, meet a friend, join an activity, read a book, even read this article. Do what it takes to keep busy. Ever wondered which is the busiest season for gym memberships? You guessed it. Besides dating, its a busy time for the health and fitness industry as well. And what is so wrong with toning up those six pack abs you have hiding under that belly? No time like the present. After all everyone loves a gift wrapped in shiny new packaging.

Remember you are unique and the only way you can move forward is by being kind to yourself. Ever heard the saying, “how can you love someone else if you don’t love yourself first”? Now, every break up situation is different. There is no cookie cutter solution. In fact the only plan you should have is to return your mental state to a state of well being and many will agree, giving yourself a new opportunity, meeting new people, comes pretty close. If you find yourself singing the heartbreak blues, then you need a serious intervention. You are not starring in a soap opera, with prolonged tear jerker scenes. You gain nothing from depression and tears. A little bit of tears is healthy, but if you’re like Diane Keaton’s character in the comedy Something’s Gotta Give where she cries for days on end, then you’d better shake it off.

So chin up mate, it all goes uphill from here and that gives you, lets see, January, February…..October, November, thats almost ten and if you’re pushing it, eleven months of sheer dating bliss. Who knows this time you might actually meet the right one and have an excuse to not have dinner with your oh so annoying aunt!
