Tim Tebow: Cometh the Man, Cometh the Hour

He is considered as one of the greatest to ever play the quarterback position in college football history; a Heisman trophy and Maxwell Award recipient; the 25th selection in the 2010 NFL draft: Denver Broncos quarterback, Tim Tebow, will finally get the nod to be the starter following the bye week after an encouraging second half performance in 29-24 home loss to the San Diego Chargers last Sunday. Upon entering the game as a substitute, Tebow managed lead the home team from a 14 point deficit at halftime to a Hail-Mary touchdown pass attempt from victory at the end of the fourth quarter.

It comes as very little of a surprise that Kyle Orton was eventually dropped as the Broncos play caller after his poor 6-21 record over his last 27 starts. A 6 of 13 for 34 yards pass completion statistic at half time of last week’s game set the ball rolling for a personnel change that may yet determine the legacy of one of the NFL’s most polarizing figures. Tim Tebow, at 6-3 236lbs, possesses all the physical attributes to be very productive as a quarterback in the NFL. He has good arm strength and is athletic enough to make plays with his legs. From an intangible perspective, it is hard to find fault with his work ethic or competitive nature as a leader.

Yet this is also the same player that started the season as the third string quarterback on the Broncos depth chart.

According to a scout evaluation posted on the NFL website during the 2010 combine, his main weaknesses are that he has difficulty reading pro-style defenses and possesses poor mechanics when throwing the football. These are pretty glaring faults especially at the quarterback position where the ability to read defensive packages and make the quick throws are a pre-requisite. His critics will also point to the fact that he did only complete 4 of 10 passes for 79 yards after his introduction in the second half.

As fans, cynics or interested bystanders; we wait in anticipation for Oct 23rd when the Broncos return from their bye-week and travel to the heart of the Tebow fan base (Florida) for a game against the (0-4) Miami Dolphins. And while all the passing statistics do not merit an over whelming vote of confidence for head coach John Fox’s decision to name Tim Tebow as the starting quarterback for the rest of the season, it would be wrong to second guess the man that took the Carolina Panthers to the Super bowl with Jake Delhomme under center.
