Three Quick and Easy Halloween Costumes for Boys You Can Make on a Budget

In this economy, most parents don’t have the $30 to $50 to spend on a specialty costume for Halloween. Here are three creative ideas for Halloween costumes for boys that you can make quickly with things you might already have around your house, and these costumes definitely won’t break the bank. Additionally, your child will get to explore his creative side as he helps make his own costume.

Lego block – Using a large cardboard box, cut off the flaps on the side of the box that is already open. This will now be considered the bottom of the box and will be around your child’s waist once the costume is finished. Next, cut a hole in the top of the box large enough for your child’s head to fit through and cut a hole in each side of the box large enough for the child’s arms to go through. Next, decide how many prongs you would like to have on your Lego block and use plastic or styrofoam cups hot glued to the front of the box to create your design. Finally, spray paint your favorite color all over the box and cups, and you’ve got your Lego block costume.

Robot – Using a large cardboard box, cut off the flaps on the side of the box that is already open. This will now be considered the bottom of the box and will be around your child’s waist once the costume is finished. Next, cut a hole in the top of the box large enough for your child’s head to fit through and cut a hole in each side of the box large enough for the child’s arms to go through. Use a smaller cardboard box to go over the head and make cut-outs in the smaller box for your child’s eyes and mouth. The smaller box will rest on top of the larger one once the costume is finished. Spray paint the boxes silver, and then let your child decorate his robot costume with markers. To make the costume look even more genuine, you can glue old nuts, bolts, and wire to the boxes as well. If you would rather glue aluminum foil to the box than spray paint it, keep in mind that markers easily rub off of foil. Wear black clothing under the costume.

Super Mario brick – Using a large cardboard box, cut off the flaps on the side of the box that is already open. This will now be considered the bottom of the box and will be around your child’s waist once the costume is finished. Next, cut a hole in the top of the box large enough for your child’s head to fit through and cut a hole in each side of the box large enough for the child’s arms to go through. Spray paint your box yellow and then use white paint to paint a question mark on the front of the box to make it look like the brick from the Super Mario video games. If you’d rather not use paint, you can glue yellow paper around the box and then glue a large white paper cutout of a question mark to the front of the box. If you want to be even more creative with your box, you can also buy some doubloons and hot glue them to a paint stick. Cut a little slit in the top of the box for the paint stick to come out of so that it looks like coins coming out of your brick.
