Therapeutic Uses for Angelica Essential Oil

Angelica essential oil has its origins in France and Belgium. It is derived tall plant standing around two meters (6 feet) tall which large leaves and is commonly seen with white or purple flowers. The Angelica essential oil is extracted from steam distilled from the root of the Angelica plant. Angelica is commonly known as the “holy spirit root” or the “oil of angels” because it is believed that its healing powers are considered that strong.

Angelica essential oil is used to help with bruises, coughs, colic, indigestion, premenstrual tension, and loss of appetite. It also can help to improve flatulence. One of the things I love about angelica essential oil is the light, almost delicate floral sent it has when added to lotions or oil blends.

Angelica Essential Oil: Aromatic Uses

Angelica is known to help promote emotional and mental healing. Angelica has traditionally been used to help a person recover from a traumatic experience. It has a calming effect on the central nervous system, helping to reduce stress and lower anxious or riotous emotions. It can be used in many different aromatic ways including reed diffusers, soy candles, lotions, scent pots, and body butters. Angelica promotes calming, healing emotions in the mind and the smell of angelica has been thought to purify the air.

Angelica Essential Oil: Topical Uses

Angelica has been used topically as an anti-coagulant and is calming to the nervous system. It can be applied in carrier oil (such as vegetable or olive oil) and applied to the solar plexus to help with indigestion and flatulence. It also helps to reduce inflammation of the intestinal wall.

Angelica essential oil contains bergopten, so it is recommended not to apply to an area that could be exposed to extreme sunlight or ultra violet light. Angelica can be added to massage oils and therapeutic oils and lotions. It also can be applied to the bottom of your feet to help diffuse.

Angelica can be found in Forgiveness, Grounding, Harmony, Legacy, Live with Passion, and Surrender essential oil blends. It is an ancient oil, dating all the way back to the time of Paracelsus. In the 1600’s the stems of the angelica plant were chewed and a way to avoid the plague.

Angelica’s therapeutic properties are many. Ensure you see a physician for proper dosing before applying the oil to a child. If you have any adverse reaction such as redness, unusual irritation, or rash discontinue use and contact you physician immediately.
