The Pros and Cons of Owning a Hybrid Car- First Person Story

With all the talk in the media about global warming, pollution, high levels of gas emission and the thinning of the ozone layer, finally it hit me that I need to do my part to help save our planet!

Personally for me it was time for a new car, anyway. My old car often needed a lot of repair and consumed a lot of gas. So I decided to switch to an eco-friendly new vehicle- a hybrid. What’s good for me is also good for the planet and I am very happy with my new hybrid vehicle!

There are a lot of different brands of hybrids and electric cars on the market these days but personally, I like Toyota Prius Hybrid. Toyota is a very reliable brand and that was my first choice. Now I don’t have to spend $30 to $50 dollars to fill up the gas tank of my old SUV and my new hybrid car is very fuel efficient.

So here are the top 5 pros and cons of owning a hybrid car:

A hybrid car is much more fuel efficient and it will save you a lot of money in the long run. This new technology is much more advanced than the inefficient low gas mileage gasoline traditional cars. This is the number one reason why I chose to get a hybrid car.

The hybrid is much better on gas mileage– Toyota Prius has a very high gas-mileage of 48 miles per gallon, which means that I can drive farther with less gas that a regular car. Personally, I do a lot of driving on the highway and in the city, so this is definitely a big plus for me.

Federal Tax Incentives for Hybrid Owners- remember the “Cash for Clunkers” program? The main incentive was that when you turn in your old inefficient car, you can get from $3,400 up to $4,500 in order to purchase a new more fuel efficient vehicle.

If you buy a brand new hybrid car, you can get up to $3,500 in tax a credit which is a pretty good deal, if you ask me.

Great Prices on Hybrids, especially Toyota Prius- Toyota Prius is the most affordable of all hybrid cars out there priced at about $20,000 for a brand new vehicle (in 2008). The newest version is little bit more expensive, priced at $22,000 but it is well worth it in the long run.

Environmentally friendly- The hybrids and electric cars are the future! They cause less damage to the environment, they have lower gas emissions or none at all and owning a hybrid makes me feel like I’m really doing something to save our planet and to protect the environment. So, I’m proud to drive an environmentally friendly car and to do my part in saving the environment and lowering the toxic emissions in the atmosphere.

The cons:

Well, there aren’t many as this is a new and improved technology. At first I wasn’t sure how reliable a hybrid can be and was little bit confused. I was also a little bit worried about the electrical batteries but then I was assured that these batteries are very reliable. Indeed the batteries are becoming lighter and longer lasting in the newer models.

Also, hybrids don’t accelerate as fast as a regular car but the technology is constantly improving, so I think in the future this won’t be a problem at all.
