The Hunger Games First Look Disappoints

As a fan of the Suzanne Collins Hunger Games Trilogy I was looking forward to the first look at the movie adaption of the first novel. During the final minutes of MTV’s VMA awards those of us who tuned in for our glance at Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen were finally rewarded. The clip was introduced by Lawrence from the set of The Hunger Games that is still shooting in South Carolina. The fact that it was still shooting should have been my first warning.

The flashes of scene show the lush forest Collins describes in her book and we also see flashes of Katniss with and without her bow. The forest flashes are cut with flashes of a forming logo. We do have a voice over speaking to Katniss while the snip its come and go. The words are a reminder of her strengths and encouragement. Finally she launches an arrow that flashes into the logo for the movie. You can see the clip here.

After the clip, about a minute, is over immediately I felt underwhelmed and asked myself if that was the best Loinsgate could come up with. The concept of the novels is much more complex and expansive than what the first glimpse of the movie offers. With so much content to work with I have to wonder why this was what the public was given to make us want to buy a ticket in March of 2012. I can’t even let myself think this is quality we can expect from the finished product. If it was because the movie is still in production and nothing else was ready they should have waited. I don’t think rushing to be featured at the VMAs bought them any additional movie-goers. If anything it let down those of us that were already fans.
