The 2011 Video Music Awards: What Did I Miss?

I see you. Yes, you, at work, missing out on all the water cooler talk about the annual teen shriek-a-thon that is the MTV Video Music Awards. I understand, believe me. You tried watching, but couldn’t make it past the first 20 minutes featuring acts that you never heard of, singing songs that you wished you could un-hear, somehow. Alas, don’t worry, Ms. Fuddy-duddy. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet you, too, can sound knowledgeable about the goings on of the pop world. Here, in roughly 500 words, is everything you need to know to sound knowledgeable about the 2011 VMAs.

Lady Gaga in drag!

Lady Gaga appeared in drag at the 2011 Video Music Awards, spending the entire evening as a character she calls “Jo Calderone”. Apparently, our friend Jo is a surly little fellow, as he often spent portions of his time on the microphone exhibiting some language that was worthy of Andrew “Dice” Clay. The odd thing was, Joe looked a whole lot like a young Ralph Macchio, circa “The Outsiders”. I must admit, I am curious to see what becomes of “Joe”, because his performance was pretty awesome. He also tried to kiss Brittany Spears, who somehow won yet another award from MTV.

Beyonce and Jay-Z are pregnant!

In a rare moment of kind-of adult sensibility for MTV, Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z announced that they are expecting their first child. The power couple both performed separately at the VMAs, to the delight of the crowd. Beyonce’s performance featured an uncharacteristic amount of clothing, probably due to the fact that there’s a baby in there, and I’m pretty sure the surgeon general advises against bootylicious pregnancies. As usual, her performance was great, as she did a more restrained number from her latest album. Meanwhile, Jay-Z’s performance with Kanye West featured all the usual pyrotechnics you’d expect from a pairing of the two biggest names in hip-hop including….

A Fan Rushes the Stage during Kanye West and Jay-Z Performance!

While in the middle of performing their hit single “Otis” a fan managed to make his way on stage and start a pretty vigorous run toward Kanye West, before being intercepted by security. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and he let them finish, but the VMAs has the best security of all times!!!

Justin Bieber still looks like a girl in an “experimental” phase!

I mean, this one is pretty much self-explanatory. The kid needs a mustache, or a haircut, or something,

Odd Future Wolf Gang Member Tyler The Creator Wins Best New Artist!

Here’s all you need to know about this group: they’re weird, and Tyler, the Creator made a video featuring himself eating a live bug.

Seriously though, they are a pretty talented collective of young folks out from the West Coast, who make a form of hip-hop that’s kind of skate-punk in its execution. Now, Tyler’s acceptance speech was mostly bleeped out, so it only audibly consisted of a few pronouns and a preposition or two.

But, yeah, go with the live bug thing at work.
