Surviving Freshman Year of Your College Career

1. This is probably the most important thing that you will need to know in your first year of college, I wish I would have known this my freshman year of college; my GPA would be much higher now. You need to know the policy in your university/college for dropping a class, pass/no crediting a class, retaking a class and transferring courses from other universities. Knowing this information will help you greatly when trying to protect your GPA. A” P” is much better than a ” F” to maintain that high GPA. Also if a class is particularly difficult at your university you might find it easier to take it at a different university and transfer the credit over if you do badly just don’t transfer it. 2. So why is it important to maintain a high GPA because most internships/jobs are offer to students in their sophomore to junior year so if you can take easier classes in the beginning do so in order to have a competitive GPA. Many of the companies offering internships/jobs will not have except you to have work experience anyways so it will mostly be based on your GPA. 3. Party hard, but also work hard is a good motto; I know many people that maintained high GPA’s while still partying a lot. This is done by going to the library I can’t emphasize how important it is to go to the library. You should treat your studies like a job go to classes then go to the library study till 5pm and after that go out and drink and party. Chances are all your friends are going to be in class anyways during the day. 4. Make friends do not be the guy/girl that sits in their dorm all day. You should get involve in university community for socializing reasons, and it also looks good for future employment after college. I notice many people have trouble adjusting to making new friends especially in college, but do not worry too much if you will make friends eventually because it’s hard not to with so many different people on campus. The best time to meet new people is your freshman year when everyone is trying to meet others, before everyone has found their own little group. 5. Finally a final tip is to go sit in on class you know you are going to have to take the next semester and try to learn the material it will make it much easier when you actually take the class. Sitting in on the class without having to take the test will also make it less stressful learning the material. When you actually take the class it will all be a review. This works better in large lecture classes than in small ones.
