Star Trek the Next Generation Episode Review: The Dauphin

Synopsis: Wesley is attracted to a young woman the Enterprise is transporting to her home planet. However, his romantic intentions are hindered by the fact the girl is expected to lead her people to peace and the fact she isn’t quite what she seems.

What I liked about this episode: I actually don’t like Wesley Crusher’s character. He reminds me a bit too much of Opie on the Andy Griffith Show. However, first crushes are something everyone could relate to and he was the perfect character in this instance; mostly because he’s a character that is always trying to do the right thing but, to see the girl, he pretty much has to break the rules a bit.

The fact the girl is sheltered and guarded by a shape shifter does manage to make the episode slightly more interesting because one misunderstanding could result in people getting hurt. And, the revelation that the girl has similar powers was also a nice touch.

What I didn’t like about this episode: As I said before, I was OK with the whole “Wesley has a crush” theme. However, I was not a big fan of him getting advice from both Riker and Worf. Those scenes reminded me of another 1960s show; Gilligan’s Island.

I was also disappointed by the fact we really are never told how exactly the girl is supposed to bring peace to her planet. She really didn’t seem like she would last a day as a leader.

Final Opinion: It was better than the description makes it sound but it is also wouldn’t be upset if I never watched this episode again.
