Review: Oscar Mayer Lower Sodium Bacon

About a week ago, one of our local stores was having a sale on Oscar Mayer bacon. My wife ended up going on the last day of the sale and, when she got there, they only had one pack left; Oscar Mayer’s Lower Sodium Bacon. Even though she didn’t really know what to expect from this particular product, she couldn’t pass up the low price and decided to bring it home.

We didn’t get a chance to try this bacon right away. But, this past weekend, my wife and I actually had a Saturday morning off together so we decided to make it as part of breakfast.

Like many people, when I saw the Lower Sodium label, I really wasn’t sure if it was going to be something I would like. I don’t mind eating healthier. But, I’m also not a fan of doing that if it means I have to sacrifice taste and I wasn’t sure if the lower sodium would mean it wouldn’t have as much flavor.

As it turns out, overall, the bacon really didn’t taste too terrible. This is because there was still a somewhat salty taste to it; just not salty to the point it made me thirsty (something I actually appreciated since I’m not a huge fan of overly salty foods either).

However, despite the fact the bacon didn’t taste too bad, I’m also not 100 percent sure I enjoyed this particular bacon as much as I enjoy other brands.

One of the things I noticed about this brand when I first started making it is it was very fatty. In fact, I was joking that Oscar Mayer was able to offer bacon with less salt by adding more fat.

As a result of this, the bacon was very greasy. Yes, most bacon has some grease. But, this was greasy to the point it was dripping off the slices. That didn’t exactly help my appetite for it.

Also (likely because of the fat), I noticed the bacon didn’t get overly crisp when we made it. I like bacon. But, there’s something less desirable about bacon that is soft and limp (especially when it’s dripping grease).

As I said before, this bacon didn’t taste too bad. But, I don’t think this is a product I would consider buying again, unless, of course, my wife can find it on sale for as cheap as we found it last week.
