My company had its annual Christmas party a couple weeks ago and, as part of that, decided to invite our spouses/significant others and have dinner after work at the Beaver Dam Country Club.
I was the person in charge of finding a place to eat and ultimately made this decision. However, I will confess, I did have some doubts about it.
The last time I had dinner at the Beaver Dam Country Club was about 9 years ago, when my wife and I first got married and used a gift certificate my co-workers had given me. The food wasn’t terrible. But, we honestly weren’t that impressed with the atmosphere. It was crowded and noisy and we thought the staff was less than friendly toward us. And, as a result of all of that, we never made an effort to return.
However, a lot of things can change after nearly a decade and, this time around, I was actually very impressed.
As far as the atmosphere is concerned, the Beaver Dam Country Club has made some noticeable improvements. Even though we were there on a Friday night (during their fish fry), it wasn’t overly crowded or noisy this time around. I also thought the service was excellent. The staff, from the servers to the bartenders, was very friendly and made us feel comfortable. At first, I wondered if it was just because we were a large party. But, I saw the same type of service at other tables too. We especially appreciated the fact they didn’t try to rush us out the door even though the restaurant was no longer serving food and they were trying to clean up the tables and chairs.
The menu wasn’t the largest I’ve seen but there was still a decent selection of items ranging from fish to steaks and, unlike some other country clubs we’ve been to, the prices were comparable to most of the mid-priced restaurants we frequent. As for the food itself, I had no complaints about the shrimp I ordered (both when it came to quantity and quality) and did not hear anyone at our table complaining about their choices either.
What really impressed me though was the dessert. The serving sizes were much larger than we were expecting and my wife loved her slice of cheesecake so much, I had to order an extra one to take home with us.
Not even a month ago, this would not have been on my list of potential restaurants. However, after this last experience, the Beaver Dam Country Club is not only on my list, it is easily one of my favorites. I might even go there the next time my wife and I have a date night.
