Review: Jon Donaire Ice Cream Cakes

My wife’s birthday was a couple of weeks ago and, as always, she had a pretty specific request; she wanted an ice cream cake. So, being a good husband, I went in search of one for her and, once again, ended up buying her one from the Jon Donaire brand.

This is the second time I have purchased a Jon Donaire Ice Cream Cake and there are a couple of reasons for that. First, we have a very limited selection of stores that even sell ice cream cakes and that shrunk even more this year because one of the stores stopped carrying them (or just happened not to have them when I was shopping for one).

The other reason for my purchase was the price. The Jon Donaire brand actually has smaller cakes for around $15 at Walmart. I’m lucky if I’m spending less than $30 on a cake elsewhere.

I’m going to start out by saying, even though my wife is a huge ice cream cake fan, I’m not. I personally would have preferred either a regular birthday cake or (as I always request on my birthday) brownies. And, as I tried this cake for the first time in about a year, I really wasn’t expecting too much from it.

As it turns out, it didn’t make me want to go out and buy another one. But, it wasn’t too bad.

I don’t remember the exact variety I purchased. But, one thing that impressed me about this cake was the fact it wasn’t all ice cream. There was some actual cake inside it (or at least it seemed like there was). This gave the cake a bit more substance and it didn’t seem to melt quite as fast.

As far as taste goes, it wasn’t terrible. I’ve had plenty of other ice cream cakes (I’ve celebrated 11 of her birthdays with her) that fell into the too sweet category or the not sweet enough category. This one was just right; even for me (I’m not big on extremely sweet foods).

My only real complaint about this cake was it seemed to be packed together a little too tightly. I had a heck of a time getting my fork through it and there were some pieces I simply could not chew because it was a bit like chewing an ice cube. However, this seemed to be less of a problem once the cake was at room temperature for a little while.

As I said before, I’m not about to go out and buy another one just for the heck of it. But, I think this is a brand I will stick with whenever her birthday comes around.
