Restaurant Dining: Guilt-Free Dessert Ideas

If you’re like me, you enjoy that delicious meal when dining out, but the meal isn’t complete without dessert. Most restaurant desserts are huge and extremely high in calories. Even sharing your dessert with someone else will still leave you with a huge amount of calories, but there are some ways to have your dessert without all the guilty calories.

A sweet tea during the meal will oftentimes ward off the dreaded sweet tooth flareups. If it is on the menu, a baked sweet potato is also a wonderful substitute for a sugary dessert, especially if you save it for the end of the meal.

A single scoop of ice cream is a fairly safe bet. If you absolutely must have chocolate, ask for a light drizzle of chocolate syrup. Sorbet is an even better choice because not only is it lower in calories, it’s usually also fat free.

I don’t know if you have noticed, but a lot of restaurants now offer those little mini desserts. They are sometimes served in a shot-glass type of container, maybe a little bigger than that and they are absolutely decadent. They are still high in calories and very luscious, but a tiny portion is a much better choice than the full-size version.

You could also pack some fruit flavored gum or some hard candies in your purse or pocket to help satisfy that sweet tooth. Another option would be to skip the dessert and order a fruit cup at the end of your meal. A little whipped cream on the side and a sprinkling of cinnamon or powdered sugar should be all you need to fight off those heavier dessert cravings. Yogurt would be another option to eat with the fruit. Be sure to ask if it is fat free.
