Remembering September 11th, 2001

I remember Tuesday, September 11, 2001 very well. It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining and I was happy because I had just started a new teaching job the week before. Suddenly, I saw my principal by my classroom door and she asked me to come out into the hall. She said to me, “What I’m about to tell you is probably going to upset you.” All kinds of thoughts were racing through my mind. I thought maybe that she had received a phone call that something had happened to one of my family members. Then she told me that two planes hit the twin towers. She told me not to say anything to the kids and that they were in the process of calling certain parents of whom they knew worked down in that area.

I did not catch on immediately of what had taken place. I kept on thinking about what my Principal said. At first when she told me, I thought it was an accident. Then I remembered that she said it was two planes that hit the towers. I said to myself, “If two planes hit, that cannot be an accident.” Very soon after that, I realized that America was under attack.

I immediately began to pray because I knew very well that we were in big trouble. I was stuck in my classroom until lunch time. I was not able to talk to any other teacher and I definitely had to keep things quiet for the class. I could not wait until lunch time so I could find out more. I did my best to conduct the class until then, but it was not easy. I had so many unanswered questions.

Lunch time finally came and I called home. My mother told me that the towers were completely down. I could not believe it at all. I said to her, “How can that be?” She said it is quite a mess down there and that I will watch it all on television when I get home. When I did finally get home, I could not believe the images that I was seeing. The news media kept on showing the two planes going into the buildings. They showed people jumping to their death because the heat was too intense for them. To actually see the towers come down right before my eyes was something that I will never forget.

Just to know that people were trapped on the floors above where the planes hit, was a horrible thing. Then there were many stuck under the rubble once the buildings had collapsed. Then the news reported that many firefighters and police officers lost their lives as well. It was all too much to handle.

Then in May of 2011, we heard news reports that Osama Bin Laden had been killed. Then soon we found out that he was planning another attack on America on the same day, September 11th, exactly 10 years after. There is a verse in the Bible that mentions about the wicked having their reign for a while, but then suddenly, their days will be cut off. Proverbs 2:22, says “But the wicked will be cut off from the land and the treacherous will be uprooted from it.”

Unfortunately, things are not going to get better, but just worse especially as we get closer and closer to Christ’s return. We see this everyday in the news. The economy is about to collapse, violence is on a rampage like never before, weather patterns have been unusual, and there have been so many earthquakes in this past year alone. These are all signs that Jesus gave us in Matthew chapter 24 just before He said He would return to take His people to heaven. They are all being fulfilled now. Christ’s return is very soon, but no one knows the day or the hour. Jesus did say you will know when His coming is near.

Are you ready to meet Jesus if He should come back today? The Bible says that there will be a seven year Tribulation period in which God will pour out His wrath upon the earth. It is going to be a horrible time. This time will begin soon after Jesus returns. The book of Revelation describes it all. Many will die but many will accept Christ during this time too, but it will be very difficult because you will have to be a martyr for Christ.

You can avoid all of this if you repent of your sins and ask Christ to come into your life. You must believe that He died on the cross for your sins and that He rose again and is now at the right hand of the Father. You must live a life that is pleasing to God. The most important thing is to have a relationship with Christ. It’s all about that. It’s not about how many times you attend church in a week or how good of a person you are. That will not get you into heaven.

It is your decision where you will spend eternity. The Bible clearly describes a heaven and a hell. Hell is for those who reject Christ. It is a place that was made for the devil and his angels. It’s a terrible place of torment forever and ever. Make your decision today to follow Christ before it’s too late. Time is running out. It’s your choice and you cannot say that you were not warned.
