Rainy Day Reprieve

The bright yellow rain boots

defy the dullest of gray skies.

I stomp joyfully;

splattering vast seas across the pavement.

A Gulliver to the wet Lilliputian land.

Leaping from ocean to ocean,

drenching myself with abandon

Running through the river-turned streets

Looking for the next conquest,

a serene calm pool

into which I plunge gleefully;

upsetting the melancholy stillness

of the cold wet day.

I stomp and splash furiously,

Until I can no longer feel my toes,

Until I can no longer feel my feet,

Until I can no longer feel anything.

Fully soaked and numb,

I smile as water rises.

Only raindrops

slide down my cheeks.
