Proper Training Creates Happy, Healthy Dogs

When it comes to dog training there are several different methods of training, there are great debates about which method is the best. There is no debate about that a well-trained dog is a happier and healthier dog. A dog needs strong leadership in order to be happy, in the wild dogs have strong leaders to keep order in the pack. Domestic dogs are no different, dogs want to know what you want them to do; they want to please their owner.

A dog does not want to run rampant and make its own decisions, a dog is happier in a set routine, with set boundaries so that it knows what to do at all times. When training a dog, this is the perfect time to start building a strong bond with a dog. Having a strong, loving bond between you and your dog will allow both of you to have a better, happier, less stressful relationship. You will know that you can depend on the dog to do what is right, and the dog will know that it can depend on your to take proper care of him.

Being a strong pack leader does not mean that you need to train the dog in a fashion where the dog fears you. You want the dog to respect you as the leader, but not fear you. A fearful dog can be a dangerous dog, or a dog that will escape the situation if the chance ever arises. Using praise and reward training methods will get much better results much faster than negative based training methods. You can start to train a puppy that is as young as four months old with basic commands. Young dogs are learning sponges, and will quickly pick up on training.

This is not to say that an older dog cannot be trained but puppies are more eager to learn. Making the training enjoyable for the puppy will also allow you to train the dog faster. Basic commands should be taught first so that you have control of the dog, when you say stop or come the dog needs to obey immediately and without hesitation. These commands could save the dogs life if it is running toward traffic. Other basic commands are sit, stay, and heel. After the pup has learned these commands, you can then move onto commands that are more complicated.
