Preventing Rust in Sprinkler Systems

Rust can destroy any sprinkler system by ruining the fittings and sprinkler heads. The best way to stop this is to prevent the rust from taking place. Treating the water used in irrigation is not always a viable solution, but there are other things a home or business owner can do to prevent rust in sprinkler pipe fittings.

Vents

To prevent rust, sprinkler systems have manual or automatic vents that remove air from the system. Since oxygen is a main component in rust, removing it helps prevent major rust problems.

Some systems have pre-engineered nitrogen generation systems that removes oxygen and moisture from sprinkler systems. This is an expensive system, generally used in large businesses.

Brass Fittings

One solution is to choose all brass fittings. Brass does not rust, but minerals from the water can build up inside the fitting. This is easily cleaned with white vinegar or other scale removers. The rubber gaskets in the fittings will need replacement from time to time, but if cared for, the brass fittings will last for decades.

They do cost more than conventional steel fittings, but over time they are cost effective.

Plastic Fittings

Choosing fittings such as spray heads made from different plastics is an excellent option. Cleaning and maintenance is easy, and if damaged they are easy to replace. Rust does not affect plastics, and minerals do not build up as much.

Various spray patterns are available in plastic fittings, including bubblers for flowerbeds and potted plants. They can be purchased individually, or in packs.

Stainless Steel Fittings

Outfitting the sprinkler system with stainless steel fittings will also ensure rust- free operation. Mineral scale and rubber gaskets may have to be dealt with, but stainless steel will not rust.

Stainless steel is more expensive than conventional fittings, but the cost savings comes in not having to replace anything from rust damage. They are generally sold individually, but during the initial installation of new systems they can be purchased in bulk. To replace existing fittings, the owner can do one at a time as needed.

Preventing rust in sprinkler pipe fittings is as easy as using non- rusting products. Of course, the owner can make a weekly or monthly practice of removing each fitting, cleaning, sanding or treating with rust remover or preventer.

Everything the home or business owner needs is available in DIY, big box stores or online. Choose the option that is the most cost effective for the installed system.
