Paper Bag Turkey Bread Basket

You still have time to make a few more things for Thanksgiving this year. If you don’t already have them, you can easily create napkin rings, place markers, and even a centerpiece. One thing you’ll definitely need is a bread basket – whether to hold bread or something else. If you have a brown paper bag you’ll quickly have a whimsical turkey, which can hold bread, cookies, or finger foods. It will look colorful and adorable on your Thanksgiving table.

Cut a large, brown paper bag down about halfway and then fold the cut edge down to double-up the sides of the bag. It might be necessary to fold the bag down more than once. The bag will become the bread basket but you’ll take the craft a few steps further to make it a turkey basket.

Color a paper cone brown with a marker – all except the very tip. Smash the cone flat and then fold the tip down a few inches. The folded-over tip will become the face of the turkey. Glue on wiggly eyes and color the very tip of the cone yellow to make a beak. If you have no wiggly eyes you can simply draw them onto the face. Glue on a deflated, red balloon as a wattle. Staple, glue, or tape the wide end of the cone to one of the short sides of the brown paper bag. Don’t slip the cone into the bag; attach it to the outside of the bag.

Cut simplistic feather shapes from construction paper or even from the remainder of the brown paper bag. It’s a lot of fun for kids to use markers, glitter, rhinestones, and similar items, to make each feather look different. Make many feathers and glue, tape, or staple them to the bag, opposite the side with the head, so that they fan from one corner to the other.

If you want, you can cut two triangles from a brown paper bag or other source, color or draw on them, and attach one to each side of the basket, to make wings. When they’re in place, fold a clean tea towel, and place it in the basket. Fill the basket with bread, rolls, treats, or other Thanksgiving foods. The whimsical basket is a simple project that creates a cute basket that can be thrown away or saved for next year. You might even want to make the creating of the turkey bread basket a yearly tradition with your kids.
