“Pan Am” First Episode

ABC’s new series “Pan Am” aired it’s first show today.
A refreshing change from “Desperate Housewives” and “Sex In The City”, Pan Am US Clipper, the cultural icon and unofficial US flag Carrier of the 20th century was reinvented for TV.
Life & Style called it ‘most addictive’ and TV Guide rated it as ‘sexiest new drama’.
That being said, how well did the show really rate with it’s TV audience?

I for one, was personally impressed by the energy and excitement “Pan Am” brought to the jet age style of the 1960s. A drama series filled with espionage, love affairs and jealosy that weave their own web some 30,000 ft. in the sky.

It took some time to figure out who, where and what exactly was going on, but as it progressed, it became appartent and made for pleasant viewing. The TV series certainly proves the Pan Am legacy: better times, elegant indulgence and sofisticated adventure, a privilege catered only to the elite.

Captain Dean and Stewardess Bridgette are lovers until Dean proposes to her. Unbeknown to Dean, Bridgette is also an undercover CIA agent who disappears in the last ten minutes of the episode. Will we see her again? A typical cliche in anticipation the next episode, will put that matter to rest.

Sisters Kate and Lauren Cameron played major roles defining their characters. Kate becomes a Pan Am stewardess much to the discomfort of her parents. Lauren, a runaway bride joins her sister in the sky.

The French stewardess, Collitte takes on the ‘coffee, tea or me’ approach with her passengers, giving us a run for our money when her affair with a fellow passenger shows up with his wife and child.

While front runner Christina Ricci as stewardess Maggie does not expose much of her personality in the first episode, rumor has it she’ll amp up her time slot in coming episodes.

So did “Pan Am” live up to viewer expectaions? After all the initial hype, it kind of fell flat, actually.
Perhaps the directors tried to infuse a bit of the splendor from “Pearl Harbor” and in doing so, ran away with a 1940s take. What ever were they thinking……….we audience are that dumb?
Will we watch it next week? Maybe. We may give the show another chance, just incase they get it right in the next episode.
Was is funny? Was it meant to be? I doubt it.

And than there was the song: ‘Come fly with me, let’s fly, let’s fly away…………’ instant nostalgia.
Until next week, adios amigo!
