November is National Adoption Awareness Month

November is designated as National Adoption Awareness Month. The focus of this year is to bring awareness to the staggering number of children and youth in foster care who are awaiting adoption into a “forever” family.

There are said to be 107,000 children in the foster care system currently awaiting someone to adopt them and bring them into their homes. Most of these children are between 8-12 years old, pre-teens or teenagers.

Adoptuskids.org is a website that helps recruit and train adoptive and foster parents, and match them with children in the United States currently awaiting adoption. While researching information for this article, I visited this website to see for myself what it was all about.

I could not believe the number of wonderful children listed on this website. Most profiles showed a photo of the child, along with a detailed description of his or her personality, interests any special issues, and what type of home environment would be most suitable for this child.

Granted, many of the younger children seemed to have some type of disability or medical condition that perhaps has kept them from being adopted before now, but many of the older kids seemed to be there simply because they are older than most people choose to adopt. Regardless, all of these children deserve and desire a loving family.

If you’ve ever considered adoption or have tried to adopt an infant without success, this may be the answer for you. Consider adopting an older child, or perhaps a child of another race. All children deserve a home and family where they are respected and loved. If you feel you have what it takes, and have been approved as an adoptive parent candidate, think of looking into bringing one of these 107,000 children into your life (or, maybe even more than one!). You would make a child’s dream come true, while giving yourself a new son or daughter to love.
