Motorcycles for Women: 2011 Yamaha FZ8

For the past few years, Yamaha has attempted to increase their number of offerings to the motorcycle market. The introduction of a number of models has made Yamaha motorcycles more attractive to a wider audience. One model in particular, the Yamaha FZ8, is a sporty street bike that has been immensely popular with women.

Bikes that cater more specifically to women’s needs have long been in demand. There are a handful of touring bikes and cruisers made with women in mind, but few street bikes have taken on the challenge of a more complex body design. The FZ8 not only features a highly attractive body style, it also offers faster engine performance. The four-cylinder, fuel-injected 800cc motor packs quite a punch for the bike’s small frame.

Features

The Yamaha FZ8 is considered an upgrade from previous FZ1 and FZ6 models. Yamaha opted to keep many of the same features while improving engine performance and body design. The FZ8 was first imported to the United States in 2011. Other features of the bike that are attractive to female riders include a completely digital display and lowered seats. The seat height measures 815mm from the ground, and the diamond-shaped frame offers both a sporty look and a comfortable ride. The FZ8 utilizes the same chassis and swingarm as the FZ1 and FZ6. Some engine components are also the same.

Power

The upgraded FZ8 engine is capable of 106.2 hp at 10,000 rpm. The 4-cylinder engine uses two injectors per cylinder. Dual intake manifolds allow for improved air flow and combustion. Perhaps the most notable characteristic of the FZ8, however, is the design. Although the 2011 FZ8 is also available in silver, the solid black bike is the most popular.

Design

Midnight black gas tank, side parts, muffler, and headlight unit complement the newly designed front cowl and screen. The FZ8 also features a shorter muffler, a narrower tank, and a three-part tank cover. Five-spoke aluminum rims add to the existing design, while a 120/70 ZR17 tire on the front and a 180/55 ZR17 tire on the rear boost cornering ability.

Price

At the beginning of 2011, the Yamaha FZ8 carried an MSRP of $8,490, about $2,000 less than the FZ1. The sticker price is competitive with comparable models from other manufacturers. Price also makes the bike more favorable to novice riders. However, those with more riding experience will still enjoy the comfortable ride and sleek design.
