Moms Need to Make Time for Exercise

As mothers, we spend so much of our time doing for the ones we love, that sometimes our own needs take a back seat. Obviously, this is part of what mothering is about, putting your child’s needs ahead of your own, but in some instances, that’s not always a good thing. If you’ve found yourself in a position such as I previously have, you start to realize that you’ve completely neglected and ignored your own fitness plan.

This never seems to happen intentionally, but gradually, as you get so overwhelmed with the business of managing your household and other obligations, the day seems to have slipped away, you’re now exhausted, and yet another day goes by without you getting any real exercise. Obviously, you get some exercise with all the running around during the day, but I’m referring to actual, personal exercise time, a time taken specifically for you to work on keeping yourself fit and healthy.

The best laid intentions can fall victim to busy lives and poor eating habits, and before you know it, you’re feeling sluggish and tired and realize you may have packed on a few pounds. It happens to most of us at some point, self included. So, after many years of started and failed workout routines and exercise, I vowed to myself, and to the management of my high blood pressure, that I would from that day forward, make some time every day for exercise for myself. It’s now been one and a half years, and I’ve stuck with it every day! This is a huge accomplishment for me, as I usually fall off the exercise wagon within a few weeks, then fail to resume it until several weeks or months later.

I simply try to incorporate a brisk walk into my day, or do an indoor workout routine for twenty minutes each day. I’d like to tell you I now look like someone from the cast of Baywatch because of sticking to my workout plan, but I don’t believe in lying. I’ve managed to lose a few pounds here and there, but it’s a never ending battle after having five kids and being over age forty. So be it! I’ve accepted the fact that I may never get skinny again, but still plan to keep doing something that is good for my body and my health. I am happy to report that since adding my extra exercise into my day, my blood pressure (with medication as well) is now finally under control. I have toned up a lot too, and strengthened my body.

Try to find ways to incorporate exercise into your day. Vow to do an at home workout or some target toning exercise, or take a walk, ride your bike, start jogging, anything that gets your body moving. With the kids heading back to school, this is a perfect opportunity to take some time for yourself. Join a health or fitness center, or take advantage of an already existing membership. Get together with a friend and walk the mall a few times. There are so many ways to incorporate some exercise time for yourself and work it into your everyday routine.

Remember, you are the one your children rely upon to be there for them and take care of them. You want to be at your best so that you can be the best mother you can be to them. Daily exercise will also help increase the chances of you being around for a long time to see your children grow. The importance of getting daily exercise cannot be stressed enough. So moms, get moving, you’re doing yourself and your children a favor by taking care of the mother they love.
