Mixed Messages to Teenage Girls

I was watching the news today and heard talk of push-up bras aimed at fifteen year old girls and then a french lingerie line for girls ages four to tweleve. I was in shock. This is ridiculous. There is constant concern about teenage pregnacy rates and teen sexuality, but yet products being designed to promote sexuality. We tell them to be confident and they are beautiful just they way they are yet we embrace the idea of buying things such as push-up bras, make-up, and lingerie for girls who are not even fully developed. It is like telling them hey you look nice but this will make you better. We are saying one thing and showing them something else. When did this become okay? When did it become okay to tell young girls that there bodies are not good enough? There is already enough in the media via magazines and tv shows, but to add a line of lingerie targeting them is just taking things too far. And lets not forget the constant bullying and other challenges to being “popular” and accepted in school our girls face every day. We should be encouraging girls to embrace who they are and showing them that we will love them no matter what. Young girls should be encouraged to have high self-esteem and confidence while focusing on gaining thier education.
