Miss Blue Eyes

The piercing blue of her eyes, that uncanny smile, and the prance in her step was something every passer buyer noticed. Lexi was happy, and being by her best friend’s side, nothing could ever seem to be better. The days they spent on the beach, or the nights they spent watching TV together were her favorite moments with Catherine.

Lexi, the quiet type, never said much nor gave anyone reason to say much about her, not until the night she changed her best friend, Catherine’s life. Catherine, a young girl, with brown hair and auburn eyes, loved her Lexi.

The night was young and Lexi and Catherine were in for the night, alone watching their favorite shows together. The doorbell rang and Lexi was the first to get the door. As Catherine opened the door she peered slowly to see who was on the other side. She held Lexi at bay, making sure she did not make a break for the gate.

“May I help you?” Catherine said with a nervous voice.

“Are your parents home?” The man with the clipboard asked.

“No they are out for the evening.” She replied, “Try again another day.” Catherine said that, still holding Lexi back from running out of the house. They turned back and headed towards the TV.

Five minutes had passed and the doorbell had rung again. Lexi jumped off the couch and reached the door in a furry. Catherine put her hand on the door, unlocking it and grabbing for Lexi’s collar. As she opened the door, the man was there again, this time without a clipboard.
“Look, I am with the cable company, there is just something I need to check really quickly. I think there is something wrong with your cable box.” He replied.

“Um…” Catherine hesitated for a second.

Without a chance to reply Lexi pulled, with all her might and slipped out of Catherine’s grasp, running for the gate down the drive and past the mailbox towards the neighbors yard in a flash.

Catherine did not give a second thought, slammed the door behind her and ran in her slippers and fuzzy pink pajama’s after Lexi. As she ran down the hill, towards where Lexi had gone, she could hear the beeping sound of the man’s van backing out of the drive way. She focused her gaze towards the empty dirt lot below her neighbors house, Lexi was there sniffing the ground.

Catherine caught up with Lexi. She was breathing heavy and grabbed Lexi’s leather collar, leading her back towards the house. As she reached the street again the man was in a white van, slowly driving down the street.

“Sorry about that ma’am ” he said as she passed him, pulling Lexi along.

“Don’t worry.” She replied simply and the man drove away.

As they reached their house and Catherine opened the door, Lexi went running inside, jumping on the couch ready to watch more television.

Shaking her head, Catherine shut the front door, locked it and returned to sitting beside Lexi.

“What was that all about?” Catherine asked Lexi, those big blue eyes staring back at her. There was no response, but as Catherine thought longer something came to mind. Lexi may have yet, just saved her life. There was a sigh of relief knowing that she was safe now because of her best friend. She pat Lexi on the head and Lexi’s curly tail wagged. As they laid on the couch cozy together, Catherine smiled knowing her best friend was her guardian angel in disguise.
