Lovely Lighting

Lighting is such a critical component of interior design! There are so many artistic creations on the market currently, so there is a fixture for everyone! Upon entering a space, the lighting is one of those things that when done well, is invisible. When the lighting is just right, not too bright or too dim, the space feels comfortable and everything in it has a chance to shine. Dimmers on light switches may be the single most cost-efficient way to brighten or darken a room and should be used wherever possible! They help to make the space just right!

Purpose, atmosphere, and synchronization are all things I consider when selecting lighting for a client. The purpose is the most important will this be task lighting, overall ambient lighting, or soft ambient lighting?
Atmosphere dictates the mood in which the space is illuminated. In a kitchen, bright lighting is a good choice, in a bedroom, something dimmer and more intimate would work well.

Atmosphere also influences the style of lighting selected, such as modern, Asian influenced, or French-Country traditional style lighting. Synchronization is where purpose and atmosphere unite. Lighting is an element in a space that should blend seamlessly with the dcor, while serving a functional purpose.

On the subject of lamping, incandescent bulbs are a must! They cast a natural, flattering light.

Conversely, fluorescent lamps are not at all flattering, but are cost effective and stay cool for lighting utilitarian spaces such as a laundry room. I am really not a fan of fluorescentI actually call it the fword! Quartz-halogen bulbs give a flattering light similar to incandescent bulbs, but give off more heat. These are good for oddly sized or shaped modern fixtures. Variety is always the spice of life! A variety of wattagesallows for optimal control when lighting a space.

The diverse offerings of size, shape, color, and materials available for today’s fixtures are magnificent! I have seen some spectacular designs out there. Glass horseshoe chandeliers, modern twists on classic Baroque shapes, multi-faceted flush mounts, freeform coral sconces, and organic woven wood pendants are some of my favorites. Arco lamps, George Nelson bubble lamps, capiz chandeliers, double-tiered crystal chandeliers, and smart glass lanterns will never go out of style. Of course, the classics still rule!
