Keeping Your Auto Insurance Rates Down

Through the years, there are several things I have done to get a better rate on my automobile insurance .I use an independent insurance agency back in my hometown, which deals with a select group of insurance companies. They will work for you with these companies to compare rates and see which plan and which provider fits your needs best..

Starting as a teenager, I first became a client of my current insurance company when I was still on my parent’s auto policy. While in high school, my insurance company offered discounts for maintaining good grades. Even though I’ve been out of high school for 25 years now, many companies still give this good student discount, which is great way for parents of young drivers to save money.

When I married and moved to my own home, my husband and I combined our cars into one new policy, and added a renters insurance policy along with it. With that, we received a multi-car discount, as well as a multi policy discount. Many insurance companies offer these perks still today. When we later purchased a home, we combined the auto with the homeowner’s policy to save money.

Another great way to save is to only carry the coverage you really need. For example, many people choose not to carry full coverage after the vehicle is paid off. Be sure to discuss with your insurance agent the pros and cons of full coverage. He/she will be able to help you determine if you truly need to carry full coverage, and explain to you the differences in cost and amount of coverage. Sometimes, opting not to carry full coverage can save you a lot of money, other times it’s worth the peace of mind to keep it in case you need to replace your vehicle due to an accident.

Practice good driving habits and avoid getting speeding tickets, as they can make your auto insurance rates skyrocket. Some insurances offer a break for a first time minor accident if after said accident you keep your record clean for a set amount of time. If you comply with their terms you won’t be penalized for the incident by having your insurance rates raised .

Keep these tips in mind when shopping for insurance. Shop around to get a better rate for the coverage you need if you do not already have an insurance agent. If you do have an agent who deal with a group of select insurers, periodically ask them to see if you are getting the best deal if you’ve stayed with the same company for some time. You’ll be surprised by how many discounts you can qualify for if you only ask about them.
