Keeping it Real-Tips About Halloween

As we draw near to another Halloween celebration, more and more families are not participating in the festivities. Most Christian families realize that that is considered to be a Pagan holiday and they do not partake in trick or treating. Let’s be honest with ourselves. Most of the people that we know participated in trick or treating as children and most of us participated as children also; however, times have changed. It is no longer safe to send children on the street alone. Although some neighborhoods still do it, it is much safer (for those who participate) to bring children into the malls or nearby grocery stores. Some neighborhood stores actually have candy available for trick or treating children.

Since most Christians do not celebrate Halloween, many churches have come up with their own fall festivals to combat the rising need to accommodate families with young children. Fall festivals have sometimes included carnival rides, bounce houses and balloon making clowns. Some churches also allow the children to dress up as Bible characters to go to the carnival. I am sure that you will agree that this is a much safer venture than walking door to door. Check the directory in your neighborhood. Many large churches as well as smaller churches are doing their own programs on October 30th or on the 31st.

Some things that you should keep in mind for Halloween are: do not allow your child to take things like fruits or other perishable items such as baked goods that can be coated with or have drugs inserted in them. If you must take perishable items from a stranger, throw them away instead of having your child eat them. Check out all candy and throw away any that are not properly sealed. Utilize a flash light if you live in a rural area so that you can pay attention to your surroundings. Check out all costumes for any hazards including make-up that might cause an allergic reaction in your child. Never allow your young children to walk through the neighborhood alone. Walking in a group is much safer. Finally, be safe during this holiday season and know that God is watching over your family!
