Katrina ( Hurricane Katrina Poem )

Hurricane season brings potentially destructive storms, that are named after people. Before August 29, 2005 in Louisiana Katrina was just a pretty name for a girl. After Hurricane Katrina struck, the name became a potent reminder for all the damage that was done. So what is one to do with a name synonymous with a Hurricane? When life gives you lemons…life is what you make of it. A short story poem: For the people of New Orleans… a poem.

Katrina says she’s sorry,
she knows she’s not to blame
but what is left to do,
when your name
is synonymous with a Hurricane?
Katrina did some damage
and caused a lot of people pain…
Katrina says she’s sorry,
she knows it’s not the same
but what is left to do,
when your name
is synonymous with a Hurricane?
In New Orleans she stirs emotions
when she walks near deserted streets
and wonders if she’s welcome:
it’s reassurance that she seeks.
Katrina says she’s sorry,
seven letters came to fame
so what is left to do,
when your name
is synonymous
with such a severe Hurricane?

So in her heart there grew a flame
burning to come out;
the fire’s shouts inspired her
to turn around the name.

So the young girl’s tiny hands
found scrap wood and one lone lemon tree,
to set up a stand for lemonade, so sweet,
to demonstrate that she
would not be defeated
by winds or floods that struck her town.
So although the hurricane blew down her house,
Katrina did her part,
and showed her spirit still stood strong,
for good;
and Katrina raised a lot of money
to rebuild her beloved city
and renew
New Orleans.

…in the Mardi Gras parade
that came in later years
one young girl named Katrina
was remembered not for fear or pain;
but instead was celebrated
for her lemonade,
generosity,
and love
for New Orleans.
