Ideology and Policies Durring the Cold War

The cold war ideology crystallized after the U.S. and Canada joined forces with France, Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. This alliance is known as NATO and still exists to this day. Stalin created a block ad so people couldn’t reach Berlin because the U.S. was taking allies away from them. In 1949 Stalin lifted the block ad after the U.S. provided supplies to help create West Germany. Stalin knew he had lost and could not stop the formation of West Germany. If the communists would have taken over Germany, France, and Italy West Europe would have fallen and the cold war would have been lost.

The U.S. wanted to just attack and break through the block ad with weapons. They made a much better choice by forming allies to stop the progression of communism. Because the U.S. used an act of kindness we showed our allies that we have resources and are willing to share. If the U.S. would have just opened fire our allies would have thought we were no better than the communist.

Truman came up with the “get tough” policy that said we need to stop babying the soviets. Because of this policy the soviets had implemented the iron curtain. That is why we did not become allies with Poland, East Germany, Romania, and Bulgaria. The iron curtain caused our hands to be tied and communication ceased. Because the U.S. created the NATO alliance the U.S.S.R. formed a counter alliance under the Warsaw pact.

The cold war policies influenced international relations by allowing trade with other countries. The Soviet Union did not like this policy and when we took police action in Korea the Chinese got help from the Soviet Union. The Chinese push the U.S. forces back pasted the 38th parallel after we provoked them by pushing the North Koreans to the Yalu River.
