I Bought a New Computer, so Now What?

When you get a new computer there are a few steps that are important to take. In fact some of these steps should be done on a regular basis. The first step should be to create the tools necessary in case of a total software break down. The second step is to protect your computer from viruses, malware and intrusions from break-ins.

When I get a new computer the first thing I usually do is create a backup disk(s) in case I run into a major problem. Instructions for doing this will vary with the operating system and the brand of your computer. If you run into a problem use your search engine to find the method.

Next I like to install virus, malware and firewall programs. A variety of free programs can be found at CNET or Tucows.com. My choice is to use freeware. Note windows comes with a firewall that I often use. When it comes with antivirus software look for the one most often downloaded with high ratings from the site and the users. You cannot operate more than 1 antivirus program. However, you can use more than one malware program which I often do. It seems I have never found 1 program that catches everything.

Now go to the start button and type disk clean even on a new computer. After that process I run the disk defragmentor. This also moves programs that are scattered all over your disk into appropriate places that will help it run quicker.

If the programs do not have the ability to set a run date on them I usually run them on the first of the month every month. It is amazing how things run better when the computer is running more efficiently. Malware or spyware can truly slow down a computer. If your computer starts acting sluggish or slow run the programs immediately. Don’t wait for the end of the month.

I also suggest that you create backup disks for all your documents, pictures and videos on a regular basis. This can be done in your backup program or in individual programs related to the above tasks. Hopefully, by doing all these preventive tasks you will be able to run your computer without many problems and if you run into one you will have the tools and knowledge to resolve them quickly.
