How to Replace a Door Threshold

Do it yourself projects can either be an easy fix or something that ends up costing several thousand dollars after a self- appointed mechanic, plumber, or carpenter has attempted to fix something that is beyond their capabilities. However, when it comes to home repair projects, there are some jobs that can be easily handled by even the most inept carpenter. One of these easy repairs is replacing a door threshold.

To begin to replace a threshold, simply determine what the current threshold is made from and how it currently meets the door frame. Some of these are cut straight across while some are made with a cutout to allow the threshold to fit around the door frame. Once you know these two things, measure the threshold and the height of the threshold. Choose a replacement that is the same width and height or one that can be cut to fit the current measurements. Testing it is as easy as having someone to close the door once you have laid the new one down and are holding it in place.

Any adjustments that need to be made can be done at this time. Installing the threshold, once it is measured and cut to fit, is simple. If the threshold is metal or plastic, it should have holes already in it where you will screw it to the underlying door frame. If it is a wooden threshold, you may need to drill holes in it to avoid splitting it.

This does not require much work and the instructions are easy enough that you should be able to install one in just a few minutes. I did several of these in just about 20 minutes while we were remodeling our home.
