How to prepare for a criminal trial
A criminal trial is never easy to prepare for, but it can be done. Crimes are categorized into two main levels: misdemeanors and felonies. These levels are then divided into further classifications. Not all crimes and charges require a trial. Every case is different. No outcome is the same.
Are you facing criminal charges and are headed to court? Fear and dread lurks in the shadows. Preparations will not come easy for you. Take it all in baby steps, and do not overwhelm yourself.
Know your charges. As you prepare for the trial, know the exact crime you are being charged with. Being charged with a crime is not being convicted. A conviction is being found guilty of the crime. Charges have different face value. There are different levels of sentences for each crime committed.
Hire an attorney. A lawyer will give you legal advice on your case. They do not always have your best interest at heart. Attorneys will not always give you the best legal advice for you and your current situation. They are not your best friend. They can and will stab you in the back when you least expect it.
Do not do anything stupid. More charges will give you more time behind bars. This is not a wise decision. Stupid things can lead to more trouble. It wouldn’t be in your best interest to rack more charges up against you.
Research the law. Every county and state is different. Laws may vary a degree or two. Terms in the legal field are not easy to understand, especially to those who know little about them.
Options. Everything in life has an option. Believe it or not, inmates have rights and options before, after and during a case. Options vary from case to case. They may include lesser time if pleading guilty or no trial at all.
Trials vary as well. In some cases, an inmate has the option to have a jury or judge trial. Criminals are not always given their options. They are never prepared for the trial. You must do your own research. This will ensure some control in your life.
Emotionally, you are a wreck and can’t understand every little detail. It is completely understandable. Taking notes and asking questions will help you wrap your head around the complicated terms. Law is tricky. Do not be left out in the dark when it comes to your own criminal trial.
